Montana’s Gold Mining History
Gold was found in Butte, Helena and many other areas in the
1800's. Hydraulic mining for gold was happening in Montana
by the 1870's. Around the same time came the railroad in to
Montana.
Montana Gold Panning
Even today, Some Montana land and streams hold fair amounts
of Montana gold for the gold prospecting enthusiast. Gold
panning is a great past time for many Montanans and
vacationers alike.
How to Gold Pan
Gold panning in Montana is really quite easy. First find
some good gold bearing material, and place it in the pan.
Don't fill the gold pan too much as you need to slosh water
and break down the material. Massage the mix in the gold
pan, working the finer material and toss the large rocks
aside.
Continue to toss the larger rocks from the gold pan. As the
gold pan is getting lighter, begin to slosh the material in
a circular motion. Keep adding water and sifting the larger
material out of the gold pan. Keep working the gold bearing
material down until you are left with fines and small
gravels.
Use the ribbed side of the gold pan to sift out everything
but the super fine and heaviest of pieces. If you took your
time and thoroughly worked and graded the material in the
gold pan, you should be left with at least a few gold
flakes.
