The Montana flag is deep navy blue
with the word MONTANA written in yellow, all capitols over
the state seal. The Great Seal of the State of Montana is in
the center of the Montana flag and depicts mountain
landscape with a rising sun, pick ax, shovel, plow and the
Great Falls of the Missouri. Originally there was a
multitude of animals including buffalo in the landscape on
the Montana flag.
First Montana Flag
In 1898, the First Montana Infantry served in the war
against Spain, it was determined that the soldiers needed a
flag that would set them apart from all other infantries. A
hand-made silk Montana flag was designed with the state seal
on a dark background with the words “1st Montana Infantry
U.S.V." above the Montana state seal.
